Barwne wspomnienia Rudolfa Carla von Slatina (1857-1932), generała armii austriackiej, potem na służbie angielskiej, administratora Sudanu. Książkę rozpoczyna zdanie: „W lipcu 1878 r., kiedy załogą stałem na granicy Bośni i Hercegowiny, jako oficer pułku arcyksięcia Rudolfa, otrzymałem list od Gordona baszy [Charles Gordon, brytyjski generał, gubernator Sudanu]. W liście tym zapraszał mnie głośny bohater do Sudanu, ofiarując mi służbę w wojsku egipskiem”. W treści m.in.: liczne wiadomości o Sudanie, o powstaniu Mahdiego, a także o trwającej 11 lat niewoli Slatina, zakończonej w 1895 r. spektakularną ucieczką. Wspomnienia wydane w 1896 r. po raz pierwszy po niemiecku i angielsku odniosły wielki sukces w całej Europie. Polskie tłumaczenie Włodzimierza Trąmpczyńskiego (1859-1915), literata, popularyzatora historii, autora książek patriotycznych dla dzieci. Opr. w płótno opalizujące. Grzbiet wyblakły, pap. jednolicie pożółkły, poza tym stan dobry.
